The compact luxury SUV segment is gradually becoming one of the most competitive and progressive of all. Most consumers are attracted by the comfort, class, and performance provided by vehicles in this segment. Jaguar recently introduced the 2017 Jaguar F-PACE as the only newcomer in this class that has managed to give the old dogs a run for their money. Of course we all know that this is due to Jaguar's decades of experience and desire to lead. On the other side is 2017 Audi Q5: a worthy competitor in most aspects although our research shows that it still trails behind the F-PACE.

Performance

The Jaguar F-PACE is available in two engine specifications: the 35t AWD and the 20d AWD. Every 2017 Jaguar F-PACE is offered standard with AWD, an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, hill-start assist, and an automatic stop-start system. The entry-level 20d AWD is provided with a 2.0-liter turbodiesel inline-4 that delivers 180 hp and 318 lb-ft of torque. Although EPA estimated consumption is 18 city / 23 highway mpg. Jaguar claims that the 20d AWD travels from zero to 60 mph in 8.2 seconds, which is faster than most in its class. The 35t AWD model is powered by a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 that produces 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque in all trims except the S and First Edition, where it produces 380 hp in both. Torque remains unchanged. The base tune is expected to gallop to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds while the S variation does the same in 5.1 seconds.

The 2017 Audi Q5 carries a 220-hp 2.0L four-cylinder as standard and an available 272 hp V6 if you pay out extra. Both engines are weaker than their respective F-PACE competitors. That means experiencing a distinctly flat and sluggish drive when compared to the F-PACE.

Interior Space and Versatility

The F-PACE cabin is as appealing as its exterior. It is tastefully designed and built to offer ultimate comfort to its occupants. And there are controls for absolutely everything. The Head-Up Display System allows you to concentrate on the road ahead while information ranging from navigation alerts to cruise control notifications are projected onto your windshield. The InControl Touch Pro feature keeps you connected and entertained while the InControl Wi-Fi component uses the F-PACE antenna to create a Wi-Fi hotspot. The seats themselves offer more than enough adjustability and resulting space even for taller passengers. It also provides excellent cargo space measuring 33.5 cubic feet with the seats raised (best in class) and a maximum capacity of 63.5 cubic feet. The Audi Q5 technology dates back to a rather less advanced period. The interior sacrifices touch-sensitive control pads for obnoxious knobs and buttons. The standard cargo space is limited to 29.1 cubic feet while the extended space is only 57.3 cubic feet.

Sports Car Handling

2017 Jaguar F-PACE feels more like a sports sedan than an SUV. It corners superbly because the AWD sends most of the power to the rear wheels to create the favorable capabilities of rear wheel cornering. The steering is also sharp, nimble, and consistent. On beaten paths, the standard all-wheel-drive system sends power to the wheels that need it most to enable the F-PACE to tackle steep, slippery surfaces. The Audi Q5's ride quality on smooth surfaces can be described as taut, even harsh. You will be forced to purchase the optional adaptive dampers that give the user control over ride quality.
