Keeping the Leather in Good Condition

Leather upholstery is a sign of luxury. Many people worry about spilling food or drinks on the leather, but leather is actually easy to clean. Even if you do not eat in your car, you should still clean the leather on a regular basis. You should follow a routine cleaning schedule to protect the leather from cracking and tearing. These leather care tips should be undertaken at least once a month.

Supplies Needed for Cleaning Leather

You should avoid petroleum based cleaners and vinyl cleaners. The chemicals in the products will give the leather an unnatural sheen. Most high-end commercial cleaners will give the leather a natural glossy finish. Our Jaguar dealership recommends that you clean leather upholstery with the following products:

  • Car vaccum
  • Leather cleaning product (specifically designed for automobiles)
  • Two microfiber cloths (one wet and one dry)
  • Leather conditioning product
  • Soft-bristled brush

Step 1

Use a car vacuum to remove any crumbs that are between the seat cushions. Gently press the vacuum into the upholstery. You can extend the nozzle to reach the tight spaces.

Step 2

Spray a leather cleaning product onto a microfiber cloth. Wipe the upholstery with the microfiber cloth. This will remove dirt from the surface.

Step 3

Apply cleaner directly to the leather, and use a soft-bristled brush to thoroughly scrub the upholstery. This will agitate any remaining dirt and bring it to the surface. If the leather has perforated areas, you should carefully avoid the holes. When you have finished cleaning the leather, dry the upholstery with a clean microfiber cloth.

When you have thoroughly cleaned the leather in your Jaguar, you can use a conditioner on the leather upholstery. You should use a water-based conditioner. The conditioner should restore the natural oils in the leather. Cheap conditioners will stick to the upholstery and give it a greasy finish. Always use a conditioner that is specifically recommended for use on
